چکیده

The processes responsible for braking fast and accurate elbow movements were studied in the monkey. The movements studied were made over different amplitudes and against different inertias . All were made to the same end position. Only fast movements that showed the typical biphasic or triphasic pattern of activity in agonists and antagonists were analysed in detail. For movements made over different amplitudes and at different velocities there was symmetry between the acceleration and deceleration phases of the movements. For movements of the same amplitude performed at different velocities there was a direct linear relation between peak velocity and both the peak acceleration (and integrated agonist burst) and peak deceleration (and integrated antagonist burst). The slopes of these relations and their intercept with the peak velocity axis were a function of movement amplitude. This was such that for large and small movements of the same peak velocity and the same end position (i) peak acceleration and phasic agonist activity were larger for the small movements and (ii) peak deceleration and phasic antagonist activity were larger for the small movements. The slope of these relations and the symmetry between acceleration and deceleration were not affected by the addition of an inertial load to the handle held by the monkey. The results indicate that fast and accurate elbow movements in the monkey are braked by antagonist activity that is centrally programmed. As all movements were made to the same end position, the larger antagonist burst in small movements, made at the same peak velocity as large movements, cannot be due to differences in the viscoelastic contribution to braking (cf. Marsden, Obeso & Rothwell , 1983).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Evaluation of the Torque Developed by the Elbow Flexors in Pa-tients with Neuromuscular Diseases

In planning the optimum treatment for patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMD), it is essential to know as much as possible about their functional state. Assessment of the strength of certain muscles is the most direct measure of motor deficiency. In the development of normative data needed for patients with NMD, the use of torque measurements is required. Forty-nine patients (31 men and 18 w...

Antilock Regenerative Braking System Design for a Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Hybrid electric vehicles employ a hydraulic braking system and a regenerative braking system together to provide enhanced braking performance and energy regeneration. In this paper an integrated braking system is proposed for an electric hybrid vehicle that include a hydraulic braking system and a regenerative braking system which is functionally connected to an electric traction motor. In the ...

The influence of environmental parameters on the abundance of monkey goby, Neogobius pallasi (Berg, 1916), in Kaboodval and Shirabad Streams, Golestan Province, Iran

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of environmental parameters onthe abundance of monkey goby Neogobius pallasi. A total of 526 and 163 individuals ofmonkey goby specimens were caught by electro-shocker in the Kaboodval and Shirabad Streams, respectively. The ranges of total length of the specimens in Kaboodval and Shirabad Streams were respectively 22-137.55 mm and 32.64-137....

Attentional focusing instructions influence force production and muscular activity during isokinetic elbow flexions.

Appropriate verbal instruction is critical to effective guidance of movements. Internal (movement focus) and external (outcome focus) attentional focusing instructions have been shown to influence movement kinetics and muscular activity; this study investigated their effects during a force production task. Twenty-five participants (mean age of 22.72 +/- 1.88 years) completed 10 repetitions of s...

An Investigation on the Effect of Using Regenerative Braking System on Energy Consumption Reduction of Hybrid Vehicles Based on Tehran City Driving Cycle

In driving and when you brake, a lot of energy is dissipated to stop the car; especially in urban areas where the vehicle is driving in a stop-and-go pattern. This energy, which is dissipated by the brake pads, can be stored in the vehiclechr('39')s battery. In Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, a regenerative brake can be used alongside the mechanical brakes to regenerate some energy while braking....
